Carefully consider whether or not you would like to make your new cat indoor only. While cats may seem to enjoy their outdoor time it does present a few challenges. Outdoor cats are more likely to come into contact with other cats in the area leading to exposure to cat fights and/or FeLV (leukemia), the possibility of being hit by a car, fleas, heartworm disease and wildlife encounters. Always give your new cat some time to himself or herself in a room of your home before introducing them to any other cats already living there. It is recommended to wait two weeks before the big introduction, and do this gradually. This allows for any potential problems to manifest themselves such as upper respiratory infections (colds), diarrhea, parasites, etc. Your new cat may initially display some undesirable behaviors. Don’t worry, you can train a cat! (See “How can I make my cat stop doing that?!?” In FAQ’s).
